Scholarship Announcement

2025 Scholarship Application—applications accepted until April 1st.

The Steel Magnolias Garden Club’s (SMGC) mission is to study the art of gardening, stimulate knowledge and love of gardening, encourage civic and home beautification, and to promote the conservation of natural resources.  

The Club offers a $1,000 scholarship for college-bound students who

 1.  exhibit outstanding interest in ecology, agriculture, horticulture and the environment through study, volunteerism, work and/or hobbies AND

 2. plan a college major related to ecology, agriculture, horticulture or environmental sciences. 

Recipients are selected by the SMGC scholarship committee.  

The selection committee will consider the applicant's personal statements explaining why they are interested in the declared major or their interest in improving/beautifying their community as well as activities, study, hobbies and/or jobs related to this interest.  

Applicants MUST  live in Franklin, Johnston, Nash, Wake or Wilson counties.

SMGC reserves the right to withhold scholarship awards.  If, in the opinion of the Club’s Scholarship Committee, no applications are received that meet scholarship criteria.  Awardees will be able to receive the scholarship one time only.

Applicants for the SMGC scholarship must show proof of high school graduation, provide a most recent scholastic transcript, and a letter of acceptance by the two or four-year college or university they are attending

Applicants will not be restricted on any basis including age, sex, race, veteran status, disabilities, marital status, ethnic background, religious beliefs or political affiliations.
